AI coffee morning - May
We were joined by over 100 members for our second AI coffee morning in May. The session offered a combination of brief updates from speakers and discussion from participants.
Anna Hvass from University of Southampton gave an academic perspective on academic integrity and AI, talking about their areas of focus and the guidance offered to staff and students. We also heard a student perspective from Kai Prince and Preenal Asher, from University of Manchester, who talked about how they used different tools and their thoughts on them.
The chair of our Technology and Markets group, Mark Hughes, posted some provocations and a number of participants gave their opinions. The group discussed changes to plagiarism policies in light of gen AI, the range of tools available and the rapid changes taking place with them and its difficulties for teaching. There was also a concern that libraries might be asked to become more involved with reference checking to find any hallucinations. The group wondered if current referencing tools might start AI to develop new capabilities. A number of members are developing materials and their own teaching tools to help students navigate AI and academic integrity issues.
