Green libraries webinar, 26 June 2024

The SCONUL community came together to look at the work of the Green Libraries Partnership and to consider how we might work together to foster sustainability in the academic library sector.

Yvonne Morris, Programmes and Projects Manager at CILIP, outlined the origins of the Green Libraries Manifesto and its evolution over the last two years to encompass more parts of the sector.  She looked at the research undertaken in this area to date and shared some case studies from the public and academic library sectors where the manifesto is being used to drive change.  To support the manifesto, new activities are being undertaken including a Green Libraries Conference, Network and Green Libraries Work.  She set out how libraries can engage with the manifesto including the self-assessment framework currently being developed.

The second half of the webinar was devoted to discussing key issues and future directions for the Green Libraries partnership, including libraries helping their institutions reach their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); working with procurement bodies to understand the scope 3 emissions of our suppliers; bringing the academic voice to the Green Libraries Partnership; and becoming more involved in events and campaigns where feasible.
